If you’re searching for an Anna Maria Island family photographer, you’ve probably already fallen in love with this little stretch of paradise and honestly, I don’t blame you. Anna Maria Island is hands-down one of my favorite places to photograph families, and after shooting here for years, I still get excited every time I pull onto the island for a shoot.
There’s something special about AMI that you just don’t find at the bigger, more touristy beaches. The old-Florida charm, the laid-back vibe, the way the light hits the water during golden hour, it all comes together to create the most beautiful, relaxed family photos.
Whether you’re visiting on vacation or you’re lucky enough to live nearby, I want to share everything I know about getting amazing family photos on Anna Maria Island. From the best beaches (some are hidden gems!) to what time of year to book, what to wear, and how to keep your kids happy through the whole session, I’ve got you covered.

Why Anna Maria Island is Perfect for Family Photos
I’ve photographed families on beaches all over the Gulf Coast – Siesta Key, Lido Beach, Longboat Key, you name it. And while they’re all beautiful in their own way, Anna Maria Island has this effortless, timeless quality that photographs incredibly well.
Here’s what makes it so special:
The beaches aren’t as overcrowded. Unlike some of the bigger tourist destinations, AMI has a more intimate, neighborhood feel. That means fewer random beachgoers photobombing your portraits and more space to let your kids run around.
The architecture adds character. Those colorful beach cottages, the historic pier, the wooden boardwalks – they give your photos a sense of place that you just can’t replicate anywhere else.
The sunsets are unreal. I know everyone says their beach has the best sunsets, but seriously, the way the sun dips into the Gulf from Anna Maria Island is something else. The colors are incredible, and the light during golden hour is so soft and flattering.

Best Beach Locations on Anna Maria Island
One of the perks of hiring a local Anna Maria Island family photographer is that I know exactly where to take you. Not all beaches are created equal, and the “best” spot really depends on your family and what vibe you’re going for.
Bean Point
This is my top recommendation for most families. Bean Point is at the northern tip of the island where the Gulf meets Tampa Bay, so you get water on both sides and this gorgeous, wide stretch of sand.
The good news? It’s a bit of a walk from the parking area, which means it’s usually less crowded. The beach here has a wild, natural feel with sea oats and driftwood that add beautiful texture to photos.
Best for: Families who want a more secluded, natural setting and don’t mind a short walk

Manatee Public Beach (Holmes Beach)
If you’ve got little ones and need easy parking and access, Manatee Public Beach is a great choice. There are restrooms, a concession stand, and the beach itself has that classic Gulf Coast look with soft white sand.
The jetty rocks nearby can also make for some fun, unique shots if your kids are up for a little exploring.
Best for: Families with young children who need convenient facilities nearby
Bradenton Beach
Bradenton Beach has a slightly different vibe, a little more relaxed and beachy casual. The historic Bridge Street area is nearby, which can be fun if you want to grab ice cream, or a daiquiri, after your session (highly recommend!).
I love shooting here during golden hour because the pier and the palm trees create gorgeous silhouettes as the sun goes down.
Best for: Families who want a laid-back vibe with options for dinner or treats after

Beer Can Island (Longboat Pass)
Don’t let the name fool you, this spot is absolutely stunning for photos. The beach has very limited parking, so there are never big crowds. There are mangroves and other greenery options, as well as some beautiful and unique rocks which make for a beautiful backdrop with the sunset.
Best for: Families who want a secluded beach with unique natural elements

The Beach at Magnolia Ave and Gulf Blvd
This location is perfect for families staying in this general area, a lot of my families are able to walk here from their rentals! I like this location not only for it’s simplicity logistically, but it’s absolutely beautiful and offers a few elements you won’t find elsewhere. The trees and fence make for a fun backdrop, and because of the trees this is also one of my favorite locations for when we have to shoot during mid-day due to schedules or weather.

When to Schedule Your Session
Timing is everything when it comes to beach photography, and there are two things to consider: time of day and time of year.
Time of Day: Golden Hour is Everything
If you’ve worked with a photographer before, you’ve probably heard about “golden hour”, that magical window about an hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering.
On Anna Maria Island, golden hour typically starts about 30-60 minutes before sunset. In summer, that might mean starting around 7:00 PM, while in winter it could be as early as 5:00 PM.
I always recommend sunset sessions for the best light, but I know that doesn’t work for every family (especially if you’ve got little ones who get cranky after 6 PM). If that’s you, no worries, I also offer morning sessions at sunset. The light is a little different, but still beautiful, and the beach is usually completely empty.

Time of Year: My Honest Recommendations
October through April is truly the sweet spot for beach photos on Anna Maria Island. The humidity is lower, the temperatures are comfortable, and the summer afternoon thunderstorms have calmed down. Plus, the light during these months has this beautiful, soft quality that I absolutely love.
Summer (May through September) can still work great, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
– Afternoon storms roll in almost daily, usually between 3-6 PM
– It’s hot and humid, so everyone gets sweaty (especially the kids)
– Summer sunsets are later, which can be challenging for families with littles who go to bed early
Holiday Season (November through December) books up fast, so if you want photos for holiday cards, I’d recommend reaching out at least 6-8 weeks in advance.

What to Wear for Beach Family Photos
This is one of the most common questions I get, and I totally understand the stress. Coordinating outfits for an entire family is no joke!
Here’s my honest advice: don’t overthink it.
My Go-To Recommendations
Stick to a color palette, not matching outfits. The days of everyone wearing white shirts and khaki pants are over (thank goodness). Instead, pick 2-3 colors that complement each other and let everyone choose something within that palette.
Neutrals and soft colors photograph beautifully on the beach. Think creams, tans, soft blues, sage greens, dusty pinks, and muted corals. These colors look stunning against the sand and water without competing with the natural scenery.

Avoid busy patterns and logos. They can be distracting in photos and tend to date the images. Solid colors or subtle textures (like linen or eyelet) work much better. But don’t get me wrong, I do love a gingham moment too!
Dress for the beach, not a formal event. Flowy dresses, linen pants, casual button-downs, things that move in the breeze and look relaxed. You want to be comfortable, not tugging at your clothes the whole time.
Let kids be comfortable. If your son hates button-down shirts, don’t force it. A comfortable kid is a happy kid, and happy kids make for the best photos.

Practical Tips
- Skip the shoes (we’re on the beach!)
- Bring a change of clothes (and maybe even a towel) for the car ride home, sand gets everywhere!
- Moms: skip the statement necklaces and earrings that might whack kids in the face during cuddles
Preparing Your Family for the Session
Real talk: family photo sessions with kids can feel chaotic, especially on the beach with all that sand and water and space to run. But that’s actually what makes them so fun! Some of my favorite shots come from those in-between moments when everyone’s just being themselves.
That being said, here are some tips to set everyone up for success:
For the Kids
Don’t overhype the photo session. The more buildup, the more pressure they feel. Just keep it casual, “We’re going to the beach tonight and Kenna’s going to take some photos of us playing!”
Bring snacks. And not just any snacks, bring the good stuff. Bribery is 100% acceptable in family photography.
Time it right. Avoid scheduling during nap time or too close to bedtime. A tired, hungry kid is not going to cooperate no matter how many lollipops we have.
Let them explore. I build time into every session for kids to run around, splash in the water, and just be kids. Those candid moments are often the ones parents treasure most, and allowing them to get the wiggles out makes for more smiles when we need them.
Plan a fun event after. Promising an ice cream or fudge date after photos is a great way to keep kids behaving through the session. When times get tough, remind them that ice cream is just around the corner! If it’s summer and it’s too late for ice cream after, you can always promise it for breakfast the next day – extra fun!
Don’t lie. Your kids are smart, and you can only tell them to “smile for one last photo!” so many times. It’s much better to be honest with them about how long we will be photographing, and let them know that if they behave really well, we might be able to wrap up a few minutes early (more time for ice cream!)

For the Adults
Release expectations. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your kids will be. I promise, even if it feels chaotic in the moment, we’ll get beautiful photos.
Don’t skip the couple shots. I know it feels weird to leave the kids with grandma for five minutes while I photograph just the two of you, but trust me, you’ll be so glad you have those images.

Arrive a few minutes early. Give yourselves time to park, walk to our meeting spot, and let the kids acclimate to the beach before we dive in.
What to Expect During Your Session
A typical family session on Anna Maria Island lasts about an hour, and here’s roughly how it goes:
The first 10-15 minutes: We’ll start with some whole-family photos while everyone’s clothes are still clean and the kids still have their patience. I’ll guide you through poses, but I keep things natural. No stiff, overly posed shots.
The middle 20-30 minutes: This is where we mix it up. Walking shots, playing in the sand, candid moments of the kids running around. If you want couple shots or individual portraits of the kids, this is when we’ll do those too.

The last 15-20 minutes: Golden hour magic time! The light gets really beautiful toward the end of the session, so I save some of the best backdrop spots for last. A few more whole-family smiling photos, as well as some fun playing on the seashore together.
Throughout the session, I’m keeping things fun and light. I make silly jokes, play games with the kids, and genuinely try to capture your family just being yourselves together. The goal is for you to actually enjoy this time on the beach, not feel like you’re posing for a school picture.
Want to Get in the Water? Go For It!
Want to jump in the water? Absolutely. Splash fight with the kids? Even better. I always build time into sessions for families to just play, and these photos often end up being the favorites.
The beaches on Anna Maria Island have this gentle slope into the Gulf, so even the little ones can play in the shallow water safely. And let’s be honest, wet, sandy kids having the time of their lives make for way better photos than stiff, uncomfortable kids trying to hold a pose.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if it rains?
Florida weather is unpredictable, I get it! I keep a close eye on the forecast and will reach out if we need to reschedule. A little overcast weather is actually beautiful for photos (soft, even light!), but if there’s a storm, we’ll find another date that works. If you’re out of state and unable to reschedule, I will refund any money paid, no problem.
Can we bring our dog?
Absolutely! I love photographing families with their pets. Just keep in mind that dogs aren’t allowed on all Anna Maria Island beaches, so we’ll plan accordingly.
How long until we get our photos?
I deliver galleries within 1-2 weeks. Each image is individually edited to ensure consistent, beautiful color and light.
Do you photograph extended families?
Yes! I offer extended family sessions. These typically run about 75+ minutes depending on the number of family members, so we have time for all the different groupings.

What if my kids don’t cooperate?
Honestly? They probably won’t cooperate the whole time, and that’s completely okay. I’ve photographed toddlers in full meltdown mode, teenagers who’d rather be anywhere else, and babies who refused to stay awake. And you know what? We still got beautiful photos from every single session.
Here’s my secret: I don’t need your kids to be perfect. I need them to be themselves. The running, the laughing, the sibling squabbles, the toddler escaping toward the water, all of that becomes part of the story. Some of the most-loved photos in my portfolio came from sessions that felt chaotic in the moment.
